The Supertouring Days: The Beginning

Updated: Mar 29, 2022

As a car obsessed child of the late 1990s to early 2000s naturally enough I was drawn to the BTCC. The close, hard and (usually) fair door to door racing instantly hooked me. Seeing recognisable family saloons thunder around a track and what seemed to be impossible speeds left its impression.

For those of us who grew up watching these tin top series we often followed a manufacturer that we identified with, usually something similar to was in our parents driveway at the time.

For several glorious years the BTCC grid featured something for everyone.

Alfa Romeo, Audi, BMW, Ford, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, Peugeot, Renault, Toyota and Volvo, were all represented during this time

Even the likes of VW, Seat, Mitsubishi and Hyundai made appearances in this period.

It was a time when the spectacular could be found in the mundane, the average could be seen doing the extraordinary. That for me perfectly encapsulates what the super tourers were. An average family car that you could buy off the dealership forecourt and with some modifications go racing. In all reality that is exactly what they were for the large part, heavily modified road cars.

For me it was the green and gold Ultron 406s that I routed for most weekends even if they didn't get much coverage as they weren't all that competitive in the U.K.

This, coupled with my dad being a Peugeot die hard having only had 405s and 406s for as long as I can remember lead to me having a 405 mi16 as my project car.

Before I even owned my 405 I had the vision for what the end goal was a road legal 1992 spec Supertouring 405 wearing 95 spec aero. Since I began my journey with it I have met some amazing people, learned a lot and helped others along the way.

The idea of Supertouring.TV is to be an online resource to help others build their dreams or for those fortunate enough to own genuine Supertourers to help them maintain them.

Like any project this will begin slowly but improve and change overtime to better meet the needs of the users. Over the coming weeks and months more information will be added, more blog posts and plenty of hopefully surprising supertourer content.

For the love of Supertouring Danny
